Westmalle is a certified by Trippist beer. At mealtimes, the monks traditionally serve the regional drink. In Flanders, this is beer. Thus they began brewing beer in 1836, initially for their own consumption, but later it was also sold at the Abbey gates. In 1926, the monks adapted the recipe by doubling the ingredients, and that’s how the beer got the name Dubbel. The brewery grew and flourished, and in 1934, a new Trappist beer was presented: the golden yellow Tripel. The name follows the same logic as the name Dubbel. Because Tripel refers to a tripling of the ingredients. Westmalle Dubbel is a dark red-brown beer with a rich, complex taste thanks to the bottle conditioning. You pick up touches of caramel, malt and fruity esters reminiscent of ripe banana. The beer pearls beneath a covering of dense, cream- coloured froth. Westmalle Tripel is a clear Trappist beer, golden-yellow in colour, with amazingly fruity aromas of ripe banana and a lovely, subtle nose of hops. The complex character of a Westmalle Tripel is derived from the slow brewing process and its the bottle conditioning.
